Senators go 5-3 at Nationals
The Washington Senators softball team went
5-3 for a 17th-place finish at the 16-and-under
PONY National Championships in Akron, Ohio, in
late July.
The Capitol Hill-based team, after going 2-1
in its pool, won its first game of tournament play
5-2 over the Mid Ohio Lady Bullets on July 29.
The Senators’ schedule was complicated by
a shutout defeat the next morning, but they
remained alive by holding opponents scoreless
in a double-header later that morning as part of
a 21-inning shutout streak.
However, their run came to an end that
evening when they fell 4-0 to the Ohio team,
three wins shy of the national championship
rounds, which the New Jersey Sparks won.
Among the Senators were Northwest players
Caroline Sealander of Maret, Tessa Berenson
and Julia Reed of National Cathedral, Katie
Kolbe and Victoria Kelley of Georgetown
Visitation, and Kendra Hoes of St. John’s. All
but one of the team’s starters will return next
summer.
